Thelonious A. Dukes Sr. Scholarship

The Thelonious A. Dukes, Sr. Scholarship was established in 2008, by A.D.A.M Ministries in honor of the late Thelonious A. Dukes Sr. ,a sergeant with the New Orleans Police Department. Sergeant Dukes was a 19 year veteran of the Police Department who dedicated his life to serving his community. He was in the process of completing his degree in Criminal Justice/ Pre-Law when he was murdered protecting his family. The scholarship will be awarded to a young man  who demonstrates financial need and who plans to have a career in Criminal Justice/ Pre-Law. Sergeant Dukes was the proud father of three sons, it was not only his desire that they were afforded an education, but that other young men would also have an oppurtunity  to be educated as well.

The award will be given to students who posses the same character traits as Sergeant Dukes :

Caring, Devoted and Disciplined public servant.

 Scholarship Criteria

The scholarship opportunity is open to any male graduating high school senior in Orleans Parish who plans to enroll in a four-year college or university during the fall of 2009.  

Requirements:

Student Applicant must meet the following qualifications:

  1. Be a male graduating from high school in spring 2009.
  2. Have a minimum SAT score of 820 or ACT score of 18
  3. Have a grade point average of 2.5 or better using a 4.0 scale
  4. Plan to major in Criminal Justice or Pre-Law in college
  5. Demonstrate financial need

Student Applicant must provide a completed application along with the following additional items:

  1. Submit a one page typed essay on your future goals. In addition , please explain three characteristics that make you the best qualified student to receive this honor.
  2. Two letters of recommendation ( one must be from a teacher)
  3. Submit a current transcript ( through December 2008 )
  4. Submit official SAT or ACT test scores.
  5. Proof of family income ( such as a parent's W-2 form, tax forms or recent pay stub)

Deadline for application submission is March 1, 2009.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Scholarship award winners will be notified no later than April 1, 2009
